Dennis E. Songer

Dennis E. Songer, 87, of West Springfield, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Hospice of the Comforter, Altamonte Springs, FL.  Dennis was born in Brookville, PA on September 6, 1930, a son of the late Edward and Elsie (Hoy) Songer.  Dennis worked as an electrician at R.M.I. in Ashtabula, OH.  He was an active member of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church in Albion.  He was a 4th Degree member of the Girard Knights of Columbus where he was a faithful Navigator for many years.  Dennis enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting, playing Bridge and traveling.  In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Songer, a brother, Sherrell Songer, and a son-in-law, Jeffrey Smith.  He is survived by his wife of almost 67 years, Lois (Gearhart) Songer of West Springfield, whom he married on September 29, 1951, five children, John Songer and his wife, Deborah, of Ozark, AL, Robert Songer and his wife, Catherine, of Sneads Ferry, NC, Denise Smith of Altamonte Springs, FL, Roger Songer of Debary, FL, and Russell Songer and his husband, Mark Lapp, of Altamonte Springs, FL, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Warner of Williamsport, PA.  Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.   Calling hours will be held at the Mattera Funeral Home, 188 East State Street, Albion, on Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  A prayer service will held at the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Albion at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. James Kennelley officiating.  Burial will follow in Springfield Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Gertrude Barber Center, 100 Barber Place, Erie, PA, 16507 or to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, 9030 Rt. 18, Cranesville, PA, 16410.  To send flowers, light a memory candle, or leave a condolence, please visit

I got to know Denny from playing bridge on wends nights, I would enjoy getting to play with him as well as we talked about what was going on in the chruch, he will be truly missed my prayers our with u Louis and family.
